FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - A city administrator in Arkansas has addressed the public after it came to light that residents’ recycling has been dumped into a landfill instead of being recycled.

The Times Record (https://bit.ly/2pCS23V ) reports almost 1,500 tons of recycling from Fort Smith has been dumped into a landfill since November. Residents hadn’t been notified of the change and recycling trucks have continued to pick up recycling.

City Administrator Carl Geffken said Tuesday there was no attempt to hide the truth and that city officials have been trying to secure a new recycling processing contract. The recycling facility the city used closed in November.

Geffken says officials will try to place recyclable material in a separate area of the landfill until they can find a recycling facility.
