COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A high school English teacher in Cherokee County is South Carolina’s teacher of the year.

State Superintendent Molly Spearman announced the 2018 winner is Gaffney Senior High School teacher Erin Fox.

Spearman says Fox uses her background in dance, music and theater to create dynamic and challenging lessons for students. Fox is also a cross-country coach.

As teacher of the year, Fox receives $25,000 and gets to drive a new BMW for one year. She also serves as an education ambassador during her tenure, working with future teachers, speaking at events and serving as spokeswoman for the state’s 48,000 teachers.

Fox and the award’s finalists received a standing ovation Thursday as they walked into the state House to be recognized.
