SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The San Francisco medical examiner’s office has identified the man who was fatally shot by San Francisco police as 26-year-old Nicholas Flusche.

Police Chief Bill Scott said officers were walking their usual downtown beat Wednesday when they came upon Flusche stabbing a man on Market Street shortly before 11:30 a.m.

Scott said the suspect was shot while the stabbing “was in progress.”

Police have released few details about the shooting. Most of the police action appeared to occur in front of and inside a Subway sandwich shop.

The stabbing victim was taken to a hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The medical examiner’s office said Thursday it did not have a fixed local address for Flusche, but said he had family near Dallas, Texas.
