BEAR, Del. (AP) - Officials say they were able to rescue six ducklings from a covered drainage ditch in Delaware.

Media outlets report New Castle County Councilman David Tackett said the Christiana Fire Company found trapped ducklings Tuesday at the Eden Square Shopping Center on U.S. 40 in Bear. He says the mother duck was quacking hysterically and throwing a fit.

Fire company Deputy Chief Kevin Cowperthwait says firefighters were able to pull each of the ducklings out of the ditch, but three died of unknown causes after being retrieved.

Cowperthwait says animal calls are common to the county office.
