GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) - University of North Dakota officials say they’re not surprised about a sex discrimination complaint over intercollegiate sports programs.

The federal Title IX case alleges that the college does not provide equal athletic opportunity for women. The complaint was filed last month after UND announced it was dropping women’s hockey and men’s and women’s swimming.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights says in a letter to UND President Mark Kennedy that investigators will conduct at least one on-site visit. The letter did not outline a timeline other than to promise “a prompt investigation of this complaint.”

UND spokesman Peter Johnson says a Title IX investigation was not unexpected. He says UND is gathering requested information and will work with investigators to “answer whatever questions they might have.”
