SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A list of new mascot names has been released as the South Burlington High School moves to change the Rebel nickname.

The South Burlington School Board voted unanimously in February to drop the rebel team name starting this fall to be more inclusive. The mascot was fashioned as a Southern soldier when the high school opened in 1961 because the city had seceded from Burlington. It was removed decades ago, but the nickname remained. The move to change it has sparked controversy.

The new list includes about 70 potential names, including the Bobcats, Jets and Maple Leafs.

It will be narrowed next week after a poll of students in grade 6-12 is conducted. WPTZ-TV reports a second poll will determine the final options, which will be voted on in mid-May.
