MAIDEN, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina police say a man was robbed, kidnapped, stabbed multiple times and left for dead on a local street.

Multiple media sources report the unidentified man told police in Maiden that he had driven into a rest stop on Interstate 40 on Monday. He said he awakened to find two men with a gun next to his SUV.

According to investigators, one of the men took cash and a laptop before making the victim drive off as a second man followed in another vehicle. They said the man then made the victim stop in a cul-de-sac, where he was stabbed repeatedly. An officer on patrol found the victim lying next to his SUV.

The victim was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte to undergo surgery for his injuries.
