FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - Indiana Tech is pulling its plans to build athletics facilities at Fort Wayne’s Memorial Park amid growing opposition from veterans and their families.
The school had proposed investing about $6.4 million to construct a new track and field complex, a softball stadium and an athletic training and office building.
Indiana Tech would have partnered with the city and Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation on the projects.
But Indiana Tech President Arthur Snyder announced Tuesday that the school had withdrawn its proposal because it wanted “to be respectful of opposing viewpoints.”
The proposal faced growing criticism for the amount of access the public would have to the proposed facilities and the destruction of space dedicated as a memorial to Allen County residents who died during military service during World War I.
