HADLEY, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a 58-year-old man has been charged with killing his wife with an ax in their Saratoga County home.

Michael C. Norton was charged with second-degree murder on Tuesday for the May 3 killing of Sherry Norton in the couple’s home in Hadley, 45 miles north of Albany.

The Glens Falls Post-Star reports (https://bit.ly/2q0Yh2b ) that Norton told reporters “I love my wife and didn’t mean for it to happen” as he was led into Hadley Town Court. His public defender entered a not guilty plea on his behalf and Norton was jailed without bail.

Norton had been awaiting sentencing on a reckless endangerment charge for firing a gun in the home last month. Prosecutors say an order of protection related to that case didn’t bar contact between the couple.
