BELLEVILLE, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a home invasion attempt ended in a struggle that left the armed intruder fatally shot and the homeowner wounded.

Essex County prosecutors say the intruder entered the Belleville home around 10 p.m. Tuesday and shot the homeowner a short time later. But the homeowner soon returned fire and the wounded suspect fled the home, eventually collapsing at a site in nearby Nutley.

Prosecutors declined to provide further details on the shootings. The names of the homeowner and the intruder have not been disclosed, and a motive for the home invasion remains under investigation.

The county’s homicide/major crimes task force is leading the investigation into the home invasion.
