SALEM, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts judge has ruled that a man charged with attempted murder for severely beating his pregnant wife will remain in custody pending trial even though the alleged victim now says she will not testify against her husband.

A lawyer for William Plona, of Rowley, asked the judge Tuesday to release his client on bail, citing an expert’s opinion that Plona is likely not a danger to society.

The Salem News reports that Judge Thomas Drechsler rejected the defense’s request, calling the case one of the worst instances of domestic violence that did not result in death he has seen.

Prosecutors say the 33-year-old Plona used a frying pan, a scale and his hands to beat his wife in May. She suffered broken bones and the baby was born.
