BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) - A northwestern Washington state man who pleaded guilty to the death of his roommate was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The Bellingham Herald reports 41-year-old Travis James Marshall was sentenced Thursday in a Bellingham courtroom after entering a guilty plea for second-degree murder.

Authorities say Marshall severely beat 53-year-old David Quintin Williams and left him outside for hours in March, causing his death. The two men were drinking that night and a fight ensued.

Authorities say Williams died from blunt force trauma to his head, loss of blood and exposure.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys say Marshall did not intend to kill Williams.

Judge Raquel Montoya-Lewis ordered Marshall to three years of probation and prohibited him from consuming alcohol in addition to the prison sentence.
