BELMONT, N.H. (AP) - A New Hampshire police officer is back on the job after he was cleared by the attorney general’s office for his role in a gas station shooting that left a Belmont man dead in September.
Investigators said Cpl. Evan Boulanger approached 46-year-old Joseph Mazzitelli on Sept. 30 for an outstanding warrant. Mazzitelli pulled out a gun.
WMUR-TV reports investigators said Boulanger and Mazzitelli fired almost simultaneously. Two of the officer’s shots hit Mazzitelli in the chest and abdomen. Mazzitelli fired a round into his own head.
Officials said the autopsy showed that Mazzitelli’s bullet killed him instantly.
