WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) - A Connecticut man has been sentenced to 38 years in prison for the death of his girlfriend whose body was found stuffed into a bedroom closet.

WTNH-TV reports a judge handed Adam Plaeger his sentence Tuesday. The man previously pleaded guilty to killing 40-year-old Melanie Heuberger.

Police found Heuberger’s body in the couple’s Waterbury apartment in July 2016 after neighbors reported a foul smell. Authorities say Plaeger had strangled the woman after they had an argument.

Police say Plaeger nailed the closet door shut and went about his daily routine until Heuberger’s body was found.
