CHICAGO (AP) - Authorities in Chicago say a 56-year-old man in custody at Cook County Jail has died.

Jerome Monroe was pronounced dead on Friday morning.

Cook County sheriff’s office spokeswoman Cara Smith says the Chicago man apparently died in his sleep. The Cook County medical examiner’s office says the cause and manner of his death is pending further studies.

Chicago police arrested Monroe last week for possession of a controlled substance. He also had an active warrant with the Illinois Department of Corrections.
