SPARTA, N.J. (AP) - A woman has admitted she was driving drunk and the wrong way when she caused a fatal crash on a New Jersey highway.

Sussex County prosecutors say 52-year-old Teresa Verbout pleaded guilty Monday to manslaughter in the December 2015 death of Robert Hunter. The Sparta resident now faces 12 years in state prison when she’s sentenced Jan. 26.

Authorities have said a police officer was traveling on Route 15 when he saw a SUV driving the wrong way in his lane. The officer avoided a collision and then turned around in a bid to stop the SUV.

But before the officer could get to it, the SUV hit Hunter’s car head-on. The 22-year-old Mount Olive man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Verbout was seriously injured but has since recovered.
