MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - A popular Montpelier outdoor sports store is closing its doors after more than forty years in business.

Owner Andrew Brewer announced Monday that Onion River Sports and its sister store, The Shoe Horn, will close. Brewer says the store has had trouble accessing credit to purchase winter inventory and struggled to meet payroll expectations.

Onion River Sports was started in 1974 by Jack Nash and Warren Kitzmiller. The store quickly became a city favorite for outdoor equipment and apparel. Brewer bought the business in 2000 after serving as a store manager.

Mayor John Hollar lamented the stores closing, saying it had been an anchor store for decades.

Brewer says he knows how important Onion River is to the community. The 51-year-old says he still hopes the business can somehow continue.
