LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) - Idaho State Police say they are investigating the death of a 55-year-old inmate who was found unresponsive and not breathing in his cell at the Lewis County Jail.

The Lewiston Tribune reports officials are investigating the death as an apparent suicide.

According to a statement by Lewis County Sheriff Jason Davis, the inmate arrived at the jail on Friday.

He says the man was found unresponsive and not breathing in his cell Tuesday morning.

According to Davis, the man had been housed in a cell by himself.

Deputies performed CPR on the man before he was taken to a hospital in Cottonwood where he was pronounced dead.
