COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say they arrested a man after a woman was found dead in her South Carolina home following a fire.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says someone killed 39-year old Amanda Peele before the fire was started, but he did not specify how she died.

Sheriff Leon Lott said Peele’s body was found as firefighters put out a blaze at a home east of Columbia early Tuesday morning.

Lott said in a statement his deputies arrested an acquaintance of Peele, 38-year-old Kenneth Gleaton, in downtown Columbia. He is charged with murder, and it isn’t known if he had a lawyer.

The sheriff did not say if investigators know why Gleaton may have killed Peele.
