BOURG, La. (AP) - The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says it will be spraying herbicide on about 650 acres (263 hectares) of a lake where large swaths of water hyacinth are making boating difficult.

Weather permitting, the aerial application is scheduled Wednesday and Thursday at Lake Long and Little Lake Long in Lafourche Parish.

A news release urges boaters to avoid both the application area and the public boat launch on Texas Gulf Road in Bourg. That boat launch will be the helicopter’s staging and fueling area.

The herbicides to be used are federally approved for aquatic spraying.
