ARCHDALE, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina man won’t face the death penalty for charges in connection with the abuse and subsequent death of his 11-week-old daughter.

Randolph County District Attorney Andrew Gregson told WGHP-TV Wednesday that he’s not pursuing the death penalty against 23-year-old Shamus Patrick King.

Archdale police arrested King in late September and charged him with first-degree murder.

Police say medical personnel at Wake Forest Baptist Health contacted them after the baby named Harper was admitted with injuries consistent with possible child abuse. Police confirmed several days later that she had died.

The girl’s mother says she had been in her father’s care before she was rushed to the hospital.

King was jailed without bond, and it wasn’t clear if he had an attorney.
