GULF SHORES, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama state fishing pier at Gulf Shores is reopening following repairs for damage caused by Hurricane Nate.

The state says the pier will be open for business on Saturday.

Waves from Nate damaged the walking surface on the more than 1,500-foot pier at Gulf State Park, and the storm also ruptured water lines and caused electrical damage.

But State Parks Director Greg Lein says the damage wasn’t as bad as it could have been. Most of the work was already complete by Friday, and the state state the remainder will be done in time for the Saturday opening.

The existing pier replaced one that was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. It was designed to withstand hurricanes through special design features.

Nate made landfall in neighboring Mississippi.
