PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Providence man has pleaded not guilty to stealing laptops and other items from the Rhode Island Statehouse.

WPRI-TV reports that 43-year-old Carlos Martinez entered the plea Friday to charges of possession of stolen goods and trespassing. A judge set bail at $2,000 and assigned him representation from the public defender’s office.

Martinez was arrested Thursday at Providence City Hall, shortly after the laptops were discovered missing from the office of legislative counsel in the statehouse basement. It’s not clear how the thief got into the office. A House spokesman says the office drafts legislation and he did not have access to any sensitive information.

Police have said they discovered the laptops when Martinez was arrested at city hall on a trespassing charge, after he was earlier asked to leave.
