NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a police officer was shot by a suspect as a search warrant was executed at a Newark apartment, but the officer escaped serious injury because the shot hit his bulletproof vest.

The shooting occurred shortly after 6 a.m. Saturday in a basement apartment on Goodwin Avenue. Authorities say 22-year-old James Dennard fired a shot from inside the unit as a SWAT team entered through the door.

The officer, a 15-year veteran of the force, was treated at a hospital for minor undisclosed injuries. His name has not been released.

Dennard is facing several weapons charges and additional counts are pending. It’s not known if he’s retained an attorney.

No other injuries were reported in the shooting. Authorities say a 2-year-old child was in the apartment at the time.
