EVERETT, Mass. (AP) - Authorities say police have shot a man witnesses reported was walking on a Massachusetts street saying he wanted to kill a police officer.

The Middlesex district attorney said in a statement that witnesses approached an Everett officer sitting in his cruiser near a pharmacy just after midnight Monday to report the man.

The officer stepped out of his vehicle and was approached by the man and during their encounter the officer shot the 48-year-old man. He was taken to the hospital with what appeared to be non-life threating injuries.

Investigators found two knives at the scene.

No charges have been filed and no names were released. The investigation remains open.
