WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Police say two children have been found dead inside a three-story house in Wilmington, Delaware, and their mother is in custody, suspected in their deaths.

The Journal-News reports that officers say the children’s mother called 911 Monday morning and reported the children dead.

Wilmington Police Chief Robert Tracy says the boys, estimated to be about a few months old and 5-years-old, were dead when police arrived about 8:30 a.m.

Tracy says the boys could have drowned but also said there was a strong smell of gas at the home when police arrived. Officers evacuated the building and opened doors and windows.

Tracy said, “Yes. It’s definitely the person that has the authority over the house at this time is always considered the suspect.”

He added police are interviewing all parties and witnesses.
