MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (AP) - Authorities say a Rhode Island police officer has been suspended after he was arrested and charged with domestic assault.

Middletown police say Lt. Richard Gamache’s suspension stems from a motor vehicle stop while he was off-duty.

The Providence Journal reports Gamache and his girlfriend were stopped around 12:30 a.m. Saturday in Providence after troopers witnessed the car moving erratically at speeds of 90 miles an hour.

Police say the Gamache’s 38-year-old girlfriend is facing charges that include driving under the influence and domestic simple assault/battery. Police say 50-year-old Gamache has been charged with domestic simple assault/battery.

Court records don’t list an attorney for him.

Middletown police say they will release more information after the investigation is complete.
