WOBURN, Mass. (AP) - Authorities say a man has been convicted of fatally stabbing a Massachusetts woman during an attempted drug theft almost three years ago.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan says a jury found 26-year-old David Benitez guilty Wednesday of manslaughter in the 2014 killing of 18-year-old Charlena Ngeth, of Lowell. He’s set to be sentenced next week.

The Lawrence man had denied charges in the Nov. 17, 2014 stabbing. Ryan says the victim and three other people had met with Benitez and a drug dealer to purchase marijuana. Authorities say the group decided they would try to steal the drugs without weapons.

Authorities say a physical altercation ensued, during which the victim was stabbed in the back by Benitez. Benitez and the dealer fled the scene.

Ngeth died at the hospital.
