SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A 32-year-old San Francisco police officer on bicycle patrol was critically injured when the suspect he was investigating for gun possession struck him with a sports utility vehicle.

San Francisco police say Elia Lewin-Tankel remained in critical condition and in intensive care Thursday a day after he was struck. He is a five-year veteran of the department.

San Francisco police chief William Scott said the officer was doing better Thursday than he was Wednesday.

The suspect was arrested several blocks away a few hours after the 12:30 p.m. incident near San Francisco’s City Hall.

Police said they arrested 50-year-old Marquise Johnson.

Jail records don’t indicate if Johnson is represented by an attorney.
