BARRE, Vt. (AP) - A man has pleaded guilty to causing a crash that killed elderly twin sisters in Vermont in February.
The Times Argus reports that 32-year-old Shaun Duprey, of Barre, also entered guilty pleas Thursday to unrelated drug possession charges. He agreed to accept a sentence of eight to 24 years in prison.
Police say Duprey sped through a red light, claiming that his brakes were faulty and his passenger was running late for methadone treatment. Eighty-year-old Teresa White and Verna Cote were killed in the crash.
Duprey is being held at the St. Johnsbury Correctional Center on $75,000 bail as he awaits formal sentencing.
A lawyer for the family of the women killed in the crash says they would prefer a longer sentence.
