COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina State Fair is over and organizers blame hot weather earlier this month for lower attendance.

The fair said in a news release Sunday night that this year’s fair attracted more than 427,000 guests.

That compares with more than 465,000 last year.

Retiring manager Gary Goodman said attendance was down because the first several days of the fair’s 12-day run were hotter than usual. Goodman says attendance rebounded with cooler weather, pointing out Saturday’s attendance of more than 61,000 guests set a record for a second Saturday of the fair.

Goodman is stepping down after 33 years as head of the fair. He’s being replaced by assistant manager Nancy Smith.

Next year’s fair will run Oct 10 to 21.
