JAMESTOWN, R.I. (AP) - Former U.S. Attorney Peter Neronha (neh-ROH’-nah) has launched his campaign for Rhode Island attorney general.
Neronha made the announcement that he’s running as Democrat on Tuesday, before a crowd gathered in his hometown of Jamestown.
Neronha says he’s running because when President Donald Trump decided that his work for the people of Rhode Island was finished, Neronha decided that it wasn’t.
Neronha was one of 46 U.S. attorneys appointed by President Barack Obama who was ordered to resign by Trump in March.
During his nearly eight years in the position, he spearheaded several investigations into public corruption, including into former Democratic House Speaker Gordon Fox, who went to prison for corruption.
Democratic Attorney General Peter Kilmartin is term-limited, and Neronha is so far the only declared candidate for the position.
