CLEVELAND, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi Delta ophthalmologist is charged with defrauding the state-federal Medicaid program.

Dr. Harold Peltan, a 50-year-old Cleveland resident, was indicted on 17 counts of fraud Tuesday in Bolivar County.

Attorney General Jim Hood says Peltan turned in fake bills for care he never provided and billed for unneeded medical care between July 2011 and July 2014. Hood’s Medicaid Fraud Unit is prosecuting the case.

Peltan faces up to 85 years in jail and $850,000 in fines.

No bail had been set and Peltan who remained jailed Tuesday. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer to speak on his behalf.
