NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A veteran federal narcotics officer has been released on $300,000 bail after being charged with stealing cash from drug dealers, lying under oath and falsifying paperwork.

Court records show 49-year-old Chad Allen Scott was freed Tuesday.

The New Orleans Advocate reported that U.S. Magistrate Janis van Meerveld rejected the government’s warning that Scott might flee the country before standing trial.

Scott was a Drug Enforcement Administration agent for 17 years. He has pleaded not guilty and his defense attorney says he will be vindicated on all charges.

The indictment was unsealed Monday.

Rodney Gemar, a Hammond police officer who worked with the DEA task force Scott led for years, is charged with conspiracy in the same indictment. Gemar has pleaded not guilty and been released on $50,000 bond.
