COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - A Colorado Springs man was sentenced to 55 years in prison for shooting a woman as her young son watched the attack.

The Gazette reported (https://bit.ly/2yXyUQR ) Tuesday that 21-year-old Corey Malik Bernard shot Sheree Barker in the chest while she was sitting the driver’s seat of a vehicle during a botched robbery on July 2016. Barker died after the shooting.

The 24-year-old mother’s son and her boyfriend had also been in the car during the shooting.

Police say Barker thought she was meeting with Bernard to sell him marijuana. She was shot as she was trying to leave.

Bernard pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

His co-defendant, Trevelle Johnson, who was with Bernard during the shooting, admitted to setting up the robbery. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
