NEW YORK (AP) - Police say a 13-year-old boy has been arrested after he brought an unloaded gun into his Bronx middle school.

Officers responded to a 911 call at Bronx Park Middle School shortly after 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

Police say the boy brought an unloaded revolver to school in his backpack. He was taken into custody and is being charged as a juvenile with criminal possession of a weapon.

Toya Holness, a spokeswoman for the city Department of Education, said families are being notified and the department is supporting the school “to ensure appropriate follow-up action is swiftly taken.”

The school in the Allerton section of the Bronx does not have metal detectors.

The incident comes eight days after a student was fatally stabbed in another Bronx school.
