BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Authorities say a Louisiana elementary school student has been arrested after an unloaded handgun was found in her backpack.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office tells The Advocate the 11-year-old was arrested Thursday morning and charged with illegally carrying a firearm or dangerous weapon on school property.

Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks says the girl took the .40-caliber handgun from a family member without that person knowing.

Hicks says the school’s principal had received reports about the student playing with a gun off-campus before school.

The La Belle Aire Elementary School student was taken to a juvenile detention center.

The Associated Press generally does not identify juveniles accused of crimes.
