JEFFERSON, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a Georgia inmate who plotted his escape with his girlfriend has been recaptured after she got “cold feet” and decided to take him back to prison.
The Athens Banner-Herald reports Marcus Mahaffey was recaptured Wednesday near Jefferson following his escape from the Jackson County Correctional Institute.
Prison Warden Johnny Weaver says Mahaffey was working with other inmates at the mechanic’s shop when his 21-year-old girlfriend arrived around 11 a.m. He walked out of the gate and fled in her vehicle.
The girlfriend told authorities he pulled the car’s emergency brake when she turned onto Prison Road and fled into the woods.
Mahaffey, who had about seven months to serve in prison, was later arrested. He and his girlfriend were charged with escape. It’s unclear if they have lawyers.
