HONOLULU (AP) - An annual state report shows crime last year in Hawaii reached its lowest point in at least 40 years.
Hawaii News Now reports (https://bit.ly/2vPQKT0 ) that the data released on Thursday shows the state had 3,206 offenses per 100,000 residents in 2016, which is 6 percent lower than the 2015 crime rate. A total of 45,805 crimes were reported across the state last year.
Hawaii Attorney General Doug Chin says the low crime rate highlights “the outstanding work of law enforcement throughout the state and in all four counties.”
Compared to 2007, last year’s crime was down 27 percent.
The violent crime rate fell in three counties, but it did rise by more than 16 percent in Hawaii County.
Hawaii started officially tracking crime numbers 40 years ago.
