STATESVILLE, N.C. (AP) - The North Carolina Highway Patrol says a man was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer as he walked in the middle of Interstate 77.

The patrol said 58-year-old Danny Rex Miller of Winston-Salem was killed around 10:30 p.m. Monday. According to the patrol, Miller’s pickup truck broke down in the southbound lanes and was abandoned on the shoulder. Troopers say he walked to the northbound lanes and was in the middle of the roadway when he was hit near mile marker 57 north of Statesville.

According to the patrol, the driver of the tractor-trailer stopped immediately after Miller was hit. While there were heavy rains and strong winds associated with Hurricane Irma at the time of the accident, the patrol said weather was not a factor. No charges were filed.
