SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Massachusetts will soon be protected by 21 new firefighters.

The state Department of Fire Services’ firefighting academy’s Springfield campus is holding a graduation ceremony for the new firefighters on Tuesday.

State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey and Massachusetts Firefighting Academy Director David Evans will present certificates of completion to the class.

The guest speaker is Holyoke Fire Lt. Philip Kraus.

The graduates represent fire departments in Agawam, Amherst, Belchertown, Charlton, Easthampton, Holyoke, Longmeadow, Springfield, West Springfield and Westfield. All the graduates in the Springfield campus‘ fifth class are men.

The state bought the former Springfield Fire Training Center from the city and in 2015 completed a $13.4 million renovation and construction project on the six-acre complex.
