HEBER SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) - The Arkansas State Police is investigating the in-custody death of a man who went into medical distress after authorities say he began fighting with sheriff’s deputies.

The Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office says in a statement that deputies were aiding an ambulance on a medical call Saturday when a man in the area started acting “disorderly.”

When deputies approached, the sheriff’s office says the man began to fight them. Authorities said after a “very intense physical altercation,” the man was taken into custody.

Deputies soon discovered the man was in medical distress. They performed CPR and ran to the ambulance for help.

The man died later at a hospital.

The deputies involved have been placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation.

Authorities haven’t released the name of the man.
