READING, Pa. (AP) - A prison inmate has been charged with assault following a scuffle with a deputy sheriff in the courthouse last month.

Twenty-five-year-old Andrew Spencer was charged Monday with aggravated and simple assault and disorderly conduct.

Prosecutors in Berks County say Spencer was talking with his attorney in the courtroom during an Aug. 10 hearing involving another defendant. Officials said a deputy told him to keep his voice down, but he didn’t and the judge ordered him taken to a holding cell in the basement.

Authorities allege that as he was being escorting to the cell, Spencer elbowed the deputy sheriff in the stomach and bit him on the arm before he was restrained by other deputies.

Spencer remains in the county prison; court documents don’t list a defense attorney.
