WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina’s fourth-largest city is bracing for work on an interstate highway that’s expected to create traffic problems for months.
Transportation department officials told public meeting Tuesday that work Business Interstate 40 in downtown Winston-Salem starts in less than a month. The first project this year is a bridge and an interchange.
Late next year, a mile-long section of the highway will be closed will not reopen completely until the summer of 2020.
Pat Ivey is the division engineer for state highways in Forsyth County and says planning has been under way for a decade.
The Business 40 project is intended to modernize a road built in the 1950s to standards that are now obsolete. The freeway and bridges will be completely reconstructed, lowered and made more level.
