NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Police in Newport are warning residents about a phone scam where callers pretend to be law enforcement officers.

The Newport Daily News reports that police received reports from two women this week. Sgt. Joseph Carroll says in both cases someone called posing as a member of the Newport County Sheriff’s Office. Police say the caller threatened to make an arrest after demanding money for a court fine in one case.

Police say in another call, the caller asked to confirm the resident’s identity.

Carroll says the number isn’t associated with the local sheriff’s office. He says law enforcement would never seek payment over the phone.

Residents have been advised to report suspicious calls.
