BALTIMORE (AP) - State statistics show an intake center for Baltimore arrestees has seen an increase in assaults since the closure of a troubled city jail.

Records obtained by The Baltimore Sun through a public information request show there were 82 assaults on staff members at the Central Booking and Intake Center over the 12 months that ended June 30. That’s a 52 percent increase over the prior fiscal year.

The records show inmate-on-inmate assaults rose 33 percent.

A Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services official says a recent transfer of officers from the last adult building closed at City Jail to Central Booking should help alleviate the problems there.

Gov. Larry Hogan decided to close the outdated state-run jail in 2015, and the process was completed this month.
