ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - A 47-year-old western New York man who accidentally blew off part of his left leg with a home-made bomb has pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a destructive device.

Michael O’Neill of Niagara Falls entered the plea in federal court in Rochester on Friday.

The explosion that forced O’Neill to have his left leg amputated below the knee occurred just over two years ago. Investigators from the Erie County Bomb Squad discovered six destructive devices inside a garage on the property where the explosion occurred.

O’Neill told investigators he had watched a YouTube video on stump removal and had made a couple of M80’s. He said he was making something else when the explosion occurred.

O’Neill faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
