EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - A Bothell man was sentenced to six years in prison after admitting he nearly killed a man by repeatedly driving over him with a pickup truck.
The Everett Daily Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2eyoPUX ) that lawyers on both sides argued for a lesser sentence because Joshua William Painter suffers with a mental illness.
Painter had pleaded guilty to assault, hit-and-run and attempting to elude police. He insisted he has no memory of the 2016 incident.
A mental health expert said Painter, a Gulf War veteran with no criminal history, lived through a “severe manic episode.”
The man he ran over, Jim Dulaney, limped to the front of the courtroom on Friday. He’s undergone multiple surgeries since he was dragged across a parking lot.
He nearly lost his left leg and foot.
