PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Are they going to be the Mariners, Puffins, Lumberjacks, Watchmen or Wild Blueberries?

The owners of Portland’s East Coast Hockey League team that begins play next fall are choosing a name from among those five later this month.

Team officials say the nickname, the Mariners, is leading in online polling.

Brian Corcoran, founder and CEO of Shamrock Sports and Entertainment, a marketing group based in Portland, says it’s a “huge decision.”

Adam Goldberg, the team’s vice president/business operations, isn’t afraid of a quirky name. He used to work in Hartford, home of the Yard Goats. He says people didn’t like it at first, but now they love it and the merchandise is everywhere.
