ASBURY PARK, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a New Jersey man pepper-sprayed a volunteer preparing for a rally planned in response to the violence in Charlottesville.

Twenty-two-year-old Morris May was arrested Sunday night after an altercation in Asbury Park. The Asbury Park Press reports (https://on.app.com/2eXbbrt ) police are still investigating the attack at the sign-making event for a Stand Against Hate” rally that was held Monday.

May says that he acted in self-defense. The victim, 34-year-old Allie Koralik, says May was yelling and harassing volunteers.

May was wearing a black T-shirt with Pepe the Frog, an internet meme adopted by white supremacists.

Koralik says that when she moved between May and the volunteers, he pepper-sprayed her. Koralik says she was able to rinse off the pepper spray and didn’t need medical treatment.

May was released without bail.
